Unified Protocol
Transdiagnostic Treatment for Emotional Disorders
The Unified Protocol (UP) is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment developed by David Barlow and colleagues at Boston University. Unlike traditional CBT approaches that target specific disorders, the UP addresses the common underlying mechanisms across all emotional disorders including anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD.
What is the Unified Protocol?
The Unified Protocol recognizes that many emotional disorders share common features, particularly difficulties with emotion regulation. Rather than treating each disorder separately, the UP provides a single, comprehensive treatment that addresses these shared mechanisms.
This approach is particularly useful because many people experience symptoms of multiple disorders simultaneously (comorbidity). The UP teaches skills that are universally helpful for managing intense emotions, regardless of your specific diagnosis.
Core Principles
- Transdiagnostic: One protocol works across multiple emotional disorders
- Emotion-focused: Targets how you experience and respond to emotions
- Evidence-based: Supported by extensive research and clinical trials
- Structured: Clear modules with specific skills to learn and practice
